Low Fidelity Prototype - Speedy Ostomy Solution (SOS)
SOS is an ostomy attachment kit that is simplistic in function but seamlessly revolutionizes the ostomy changing process, up to 70 times faster. The SOS kit consists of two parts in which each provide a unique function by providing maximum efficiency and effectiveness while using minimal effort which is perfect for accommodating the challenges that come along with arthritis and an ostomy. The prototype has two devices, along with an attachment mechanism utilizing lightweight neodymium magnets that work in sync to achieve the primary objective.
Considering the fact that Sulu suffers from RA, he undergoes a painstakingly cumbersome process as he struggles to cut a hole in the flange to accommodate the varying stoma size; thus, we needed to eliminate his pain and reduce his change time caused by his arthritis. This is the reason we created "The Cutter". This device targets the issue of his arthritis and cuts the original flange with one press (the work is done via body weight) without requiring fine finger and wrist movement. Thus, resolving the issue & accelerating Sulu’s change time and achieving our primary objective. We conducted a study and it took approximately 45s to complete the procedure, saving an incredible amount of time.

The second component is known as “The Ring”. This device has multiple functions: to adjust/ adapt to the stoma’s ever-changing conformity and to secure the appliance to the stoma to to ensure that the appliance doesn’t fall off and to prevent the leakage of fecal matter. The component resembles a hollow cylinder; the main body of the cylinder is composed of a waterproof, viscoelastic polyurethane. This material is elastic and form fitting and it will fill the uneven skin contours around the stoma and will adapt to any stoma conformation.

The Cutter will puncture the hard plastic of the flange, with minimal force, and cut out a 48mm diameter hole, in which the mouldable ring will then be inserted. The Ring will be clipped in place by magnets attached on the flange and and in the Ring. It will then be able to move with the change in size and shape of the stoma, through the hole which was created by the Cutter.
